Recent rains have rejuvenated the roadside wildflowers in North Texas. A bee collects pollen from a firewheel, also called an Indian blanket, in northern Denton county near Slidell recently.

Animal shelter foundation leader resigns

The co-founder and longtime chairwoman of the Denton Animal Foundation has resigned. Bette Sherman announced last week that she submitted her letter of resignation, effective immediately, to the board on May 16. The group’s bylaws state that the vice chairman automatically becomes the chairman, but foundation secretary Laura Brewer has been taking care of the group’s many day-to-day activities.

Denton County commissioners and the Susan G. Komen Foundation are out to help women who have low income receive testing for breast cancer. Commissioners approved a $35,000 grant from the foundation that will go toward providing access to mammograms to women who qualify.
