Tips for searching

Be as specific as you can with your search terms. If your search is unsuccessful, hit "Start new search" and refine your search terms. This can be done by adding search terms if you find too many articles or by making your search more general if you get no results.

Searching a phrase or name

Using quotation marks around the phrase or name will result in a more precise search. Examples: "Dallas Symphony Orchestra" or "Troy Aikman"

Adding additional terms to a search

Additional terms can be added to a search by using the commands: AND, OR, NOT, NEAR, ADJ

Command
Example
AND Aikman and cowboys
Concert and "Dallas Symphony Orchestra"
Dallas and "mayoral election" and results
Using AND finds stories containing all the terms.
QUOTATIONS "Jerry Jones" and NFL
Putting quotation marks around the name makes it a phrase search.
Jerry Jones and NFL
Without the quotes the search is treated like this:
Jerry and Jones and NFL
This could return stories about Jerry Miller and Paul Jones in the NFL.
OR Aikman or cowboys
This will find stories containing either term.
NOT Cowboys not football
This will find stories with the term cowboys but will exclude the term football.
NEAR (#) arena and Dallas near5 election
This would require that the words arena, Dallas and Election would be within five words of each other.
ADJ (#) Larry adj2 Hagman
This would require that the term Larry have no more than two words between it and the term Hagman. The ADJ command requires that term Larry appears before the term Hagman.

Operators can be either upper or lower case. Using AND narrows the search, using OR broadens the search and using NOT eliminates unwanted items. Often the NOT operator can be useful in refining an initial query that returns a large number of stories. NEAR or ADJ controls how close your search terms must be to one another. ADJ also checks that the words are in the same order as you put them. If you do not get any results from your search you may want to:

Select different search words.

Check the spelling or your terms.

Check the date range selected for searching.

Define your search results

1. The most common choice for displaying search results is the Most Recent First. This is usually the best choice.

2. To get results ranked in order of relevancy to your topic select Display by Relevance. Use this option only when you do not need to get the most recent story first.
