Local cupcake makers to appear on Food Network

The third time was the charm for Van and Ngoc Nguyen.

The sisters who own NV Cupcakes applied on three occasions to compete on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars.

And after two disappointments, they were called to fly to Los Angeles to compete in July.

“The stress is really there,” Van Nguyen, 32, said of being on set. “The pressure is so hot in the kitchen.”

There are times she wanted to bolt but didn’t.

Both enjoyed the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“It’s good to see what other people are doing,” Ngoc Nguyen, 27, said.

During the show, the cupcake makers compete for $10,000 and the opportunity to showcase their cupcakes at a celebrity function. One of the bakers is eliminated in each round.

The first round is about taste, the second round is about taste and presentation, and in the third round the competitors have to make a display of 1,000 cupcakes.

Van and Ngoc Nguyen had just opened their Denton location a few weeks before leaving for the taping.

“Everyone thought we were shut down,” Ngoc Nguyen said.

They had to shut down both shops while they were gone because they bake all the cupcakes.

The sisters started their shop after making a birthday cake for Van Nguyen’s son’s first birthday in 2008. After that, they began to get requests from family and friends to make cupcakes and cakes for different celebrations.

The pair decided after the requests it would be good to open their own shop.

The Corinth shop, located at 4251 FM2181/Swisher Road, Suite 216, opened in 2010. The Denton shop, located at 118 E. McKinney St., opened this year.

“We still do all the baking and decorating at the store in Corinth,” Ngoc Nguyen said.

Neither has a background in business or baking. Ngoc Nguyen has a degree in biology; Van Nguyen used to work in human resources.

“We’re the N and V in the cupcake,” Ngoc Nguyen said.

They enjoy seeing their customers going through the stages of life, from coming in pregnant to celebrating the baby’s first birthday.

“It’s really rewarding to see the steps of life,” she said.

It’s not like a doughnut shop, Van Nguyen said; they don’t have to get up early to start baking. Van Nguyen gets there at about 8 a.m. and Ngoc Nguyen gets in at about 8:30 or 9 a.m.

“Every day is a different day,” Van Nguyen said, but it’s always someone’s birthday or wedding or baby shower.

Different flavors are featured each day.

The sisters said they like to get creative with their cupcakes because it’s boring to make the same cupcakes every day.

Van and Ngoc Nguyen make the traditional flavors of cupcakes, from vanilla to strawberry, but they also make custom flavors, including turtle cheesecake, pumpkin spice, Neapolitan, strawberry lemonade, Almond Joy, pink champagne and key lime pie.

“They all have their own personalities,” Van Nguyen said.
