Name: Ryan Taylor Crocker
Occupation: owner, Earthwise Gardens and Produce
Birth date and place: March 7; Lubbock
Family: wife, Christina, 30; and sons Evan, 7, and Ruben, 4.
The one thing I enjoy most about my work is: the variety. One day I’m sweating under the sunshine in my garden, the next I’m on the phone ordering food from local farmers and artisans, and driving out to meet them.
My business philosophy is: For me it is very simple — the customer is king. The best thing I can do in business is consistently delight my customers. When they are happy, I’m happy, and when they are so happy they tell their friends, my business grows.
If I could, I’d be a: live-aboard captain on a charter sailboat in the Caribbean … maybe in my next life!
I’m so sick of: battling with the pigweed in my garden!
The four guests at my fantasy dinner party would be: Alice Waters, Wendell Berry, my wife Christina and my grandfather who I never met.
My hobbies are: I’ve always loved sports. These days it’s usually weightlifting, basketball and volleyball. I also like to cook, and of course gardening is the hobby that has taken over my life!
The last book I read was: Contagious: Why Things Catch On by Jonah Berger.
I wish I knew how to: meditate consistently.
Nobody knows I: was a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy.
The people I most admire are: lots of folks — my parents for sure, but also a farmer I do a lot of business with in Austin, Brenton Johnson.
My guilty pleasures are: Blue Bell and anything from Ravelin.
I regret: not moving back to Denton sooner — we love it here!
If I could change one thing about Denton, it would be: the darn one-ways!
When I retire, I plan to: garden! So I guess I’m already retired, or I’ll never retire — depending on how you look at it.
