Flowers Foods opens discount shop not far from Denton plant
The Flowers Foods Denton bakery now has a retail location where it sells discounted bread and snacks.
Flowers Discount Bakery Store, on Loop 288, opened at the beginning of December.
“We still sell fresh bread at ‘stale’ prices,” said Janet Richards, store manager.
Prices are around 99 cents for a loaf of white bread and $1.19 for a wheat loaf. Everything is discounted from grocery store prices, Richards said.
While the bread is about four days old, the other items — including cookies, chips, snack cakes and tortillas — are ordered fresh, she said.
Most of the products sold at the store are Flowers Foods brands, which include Nature’s Own, Whitewheat, Cobblestone Mill, Tastykake, Mrs. Freshley’s, European Bakers, Blue Bird and Mi Casa.
Flowers Foods, which is headquartered in Thomasville, Ga., operates discount stores near its other bakeries.
The company had been trying to find a location for a retail shop in Denton but didn’t find the right location until the end of last year. The 2,500 square-foot store is located at 400 N. Loop 288, the previous location of Savvy Shopper.
“We want to be the neighborhood bread store,” said Ken Kratch, retail sales manager with Flowers Foods of Denton.
Orange stickers are sporadically placed on some of the packages to let customers know the bread was baked locally. They say: “Baked with pride in Denton, Texas.”
“You have a bakery right here in Denton?” a customer asked Richards as she rang up a purchase recently.
Kratch said some residents aren’t aware there is a bakery in Denton. The plant, at 4210 Edwards Road, is about four miles away from the new store.
The 211,000-square-foot bakery has two production lines, one for bread and one for buns. It produces 1,100 buns and 170 loaves of bread per minute, according to the company website.
The Thomasville, Ga.-based company recently signed purchase agreements for certain Hostess Brands, including Wonder, Nature’s Pride, Merita, Home Pride and Butternut bread brands. The agreements also include 20 bakeries and 38 depots for about $360 million, a news release stated. Flowers Foods also signed a purchase agreement for the Beefsteak bread brand for $30 million, according to the news release.
“The transactions are subject to a court-approved bankruptcy process being initiated by Hostess,” the release stated.
