Janet Laminack: Denton County Fruit, Vegetable, Herb and Flower Show set

Do you grow the loveliest squash in the neighborhood? Are your tomatoes better than candy? If you find that you would rather brag about your peaches than your grandchildren, I’ve got just the event for you: the Denton County Fruit, Vegetable, Herb and Flower Show.

This is a free contest open to all Denton County residents on Saturday at the Fire Fighters Memorial Park at the corner of Carroll Boulevard and Mulberry Street in Denton.

As the name implies, it’s not just about vegetables and fruits; herbs and flowers also can be entered. You can even bring a potted plant. For the flowers, mixed bouquets are not allowed.

Entries will be judged on a combination of market qualities, including difficulty of growing in North Texas. Fruits and vegetables will also be judged on flavor. All the rules and details can be found at our office or online at Registration for the show is between 9 and 10 a.m. Saturday.

This is a fun way to see what your fellow gardeners are growing with success and enjoy a little friendly competition. There are separate divisions for children and adults. Ribbons are given out for the top in each class. NorthStar Bank provides cash prizes for the division champions and Best in Show. The awards are presented at noon or immediately after judging is completed.

While you anxiously await the judges’ decisions, you can visit the Denton County Farmers Market and purchase some locally grown produce. Also, the Denton Community Market is adjacent to the show with music and artisan products. You can also visit the “Ask a Master Gardener” booth and ask your toughest horticulture question. Hope to see you there.
