Maggie Jover: Learn new ways to take care of your type 2 diabetes

Do you feel like you need to know more about how to take care of your type 2 diabetes?

If you were recently diagnosed or you have had diabetes a long time, you can benefit from learning the latest things about taking care of yourself so you can reduce your risks for complications, such as reduced vision or nerve pain. Enroll for “Do Well Be Well with Diabetes” lesson series.

An important tool for managing your diabetes is to control your blood sugar through managing your food choices. The diabetes education series will teach how to make the lifestyle changes needed to control your blood sugar, such as carbohydrate counting, exercising and making healthy choices when eating away from home.

Another important tool for managing your diabetes is your glucose meter. Some people avoid checking their blood glucose because pricking their fingers for a sample hurts too much. This series will help you learn other places to test your blood glucose that significantly reduces pain. New lancet sets also allow you to reduce the depth of the needle prick and to use a thinner needle because smaller drops of blood are required to get a good reading. Many people report that their pain and discomfort are reduced to almost nothing once they get new equipment and learn how to use it properly.

While taking care of your diabetes is not easy, you might be surprised to learn that there are many new tools and methods to help you keep your blood glucose in the recommended ranges.

The “Do Well Be Well with Diabetes” classes will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Feb. 4, 11, 18 and 25 at the Joseph Carroll Building, Room 115. Classes will be taught by Dr. Maggie Jover, County Extension agent — Family and Consumer Sciences. Call the Denton County Extension office at 940-349-2882 to enroll or for more information.
