Janet Laminack: Gardeners to display bounty

Show offers prizes for locals; training planned

It’s about that time of year again — time to show off what you’ve grown in your garden at the Denton County Fruit, Vegetable, Herb and Flower Show. This is a great event to participate in, even as a beginning gardener, and there are cash prizes!

This free contest will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Denton County Historical Park, adjacent to the Denton Community Market and Denton County Farmers Market. Complete rules and vegetable growing information are available at While you wait for the judges’ careful deliberation, you can pick up some produce at either one of the nearby markets that feature fresh homegrown vegetables and fruits.

But what if you have more produce than you can handle? Sign up to be a vendor at the Denton County Farmers Market — the organization continues to accept applicants until July 1. Membership costs $50 per year, and the day fee is $10.

School is almost out, so it’s time to start thinking about what to do with teachers over the summer. Have no worry, Science With Attitude teacher training is being offered again Aug. 4-8.

This free hands-on interactive training program is geared toward elementary teachers, who can learn how to incorporate nature and horticulture into their curriculum to enhance learning opportunities. Pass the information along to any interested teachers you know, and visit for all the details.

And finally, for the large backyard gardener or small horticulture farmer, we are offering a “Tractor 101” class from 2 to 5 p.m. June 28. Learn about the most commonly used implements, small tractors, gator or truck-pulled options, sprayers and sprayer calibration. This will be an in-the-field class with demonstrations. Advance registration is required, and the cost is $15. Call 940-349-2883 to register.

Visit or call 940.349.2892 for more information on any of these events.
