Lawyer William Mann announces retirement

William Ralph Mann will close his law office later this month and enter retirement.

Mann, who served as Denton’s first assistant city attorney in 1968, has stayed in Denton since, becoming city attorney in 1973 and founding his law practice in 1999.

Also during his time in Denton, Mann established a Christian mission organization, Mission Possible Foundation, in 1974. The organization is now in 12 European countries and has a staff of more than 100 people.

Horse class next week

There will be a horse hay quality and poisonous plant class for horse owners and community members on Tuesday.

The event, organized by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service in Denton County and its horse committee, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Covenant Church Cross Roads campus at 8690 Liberty Road.

Tam Garland of the Texas A&M veterinary medical diagnostic lab will speak about plants that are harmful to horses, and former agricultural science teacher Mike Sommers will explain how to select hay for horses.

The $15 registration fee can be paid for at the door.

Barbecue restaurant opens this weekend

A new barbecue joint has joined downtown Denton after a successful fundraising campaign to help cover opening costs.

Bet the House Barbecue had its grand opening Saturday at 508 S. Elm St.

Operating hours will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays, although the restaurant could close early if it sells out.

Local nurse named one of best in area

Janet Larrimore, a nurse at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton, was named one of the top 100 nurses in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

She has been a nurse for 22 years. The rankings were published by The Great 100 Nurses of Dallas and Fort Worth, which has published the list annually for 24 years.

New hospital giving away safety lights

The new Medical Center of Alliance won’t fully open until next year, but it has already started offering giveaways.

People in Tarrant and Denton counties can get free pedestrian safety lights, which can help bikers, joggers and others be seen by vehicle drivers at night.

The hospital is set to open in 2015 off Interstate 35W in Alliance, and the emergency room is already open.
