CarMax is planning a 7,000-square-foot storefront with a lot for approximately 150 vehicles in Denton along South Interstate 35E.
The company has filed preliminary paperwork with the city after months of talks with city officials to determine if this is the right spot for a store. This will be the company's first location in Denton County.
Caroline Booth, director of economic development for the city, said she worked with the company's consultants to provide demographic information and potential locations.
"CarMax is a really good company, and they're a solid, fast-growing company," Booth said. "They do a lot of corporate engagement, too, so it's a good company to have in Denton. We're excited they want to be here."
The car superstore is planning to be alongside other car dealerships between State School Road and Post Oak Drive on the southwest side of the highway.
There's no specific timeline for opening since the company just started planning for the location, said Lindsey R. Duke, a spokeswoman for the company. Typically, it takes two to three years from start to finish on projects, and store openings are formally announced one year before their anticipated grand openings, she said.
"While we are excited to be growing and bringing the simple and stress-free CarMax experience to more locations across the country, we are unable to confirm a timeline for construction at this time," she said in an email.
The publicly traded company sells used vehicles across the country, and its business model is based on a "no-haggle experience."
There are six CarMax locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The closest location to Denton is in Plano.
