University of North Texas names next provost

Jennifer Evans-Cowley is heading back to the University of North Texas to serve as the school's provost and vice president for academic affairs. 

Evans-Cowley graduated from UNT with a master's degree in public administration in 1997 and will return to campus the first week of July to oversee the academic side of the university. 

"I was really impressed by all the great things UNT has been doing over the last decade," she said Monday. "There's been tremendous progress in their recognition, like becoming a Tier One research university and recognition of their academic programs."

She will replace Finley Graves, who has served as interim provost since 2015. 

The job encompasses every aspect of academic management for the university, according to the office's organizational chart. The provost at UNT oversees all of the colleges and deans, academic affairs, outreach to new and potential students, and space management.

After obtaining her master's degree from UNT in 1997, Evans-Cowley went to Texas A&M University where she earned her doctorate in urban and regional science, a track that's normally set for city management positions. However, she wanted to stay in academia. This gives her a different perspective when looking at planning and development for a university, she said. 

"What I really love doing is working with university stakeholders to create a vision for the future and focus on strategies for making that possible," she said. "At a university level, it's incredibly exciting and fun for me." 

Currently, Evans-Cowley is the vice provost for capital planning and regional campuses at Ohio State University. In the position, she created development plans, conducted a salary study for faculty and worked to improve teaching quality.
