University of North Texas students among winners at statewide debate competition

The University of North Texas debate team won the Debate Sweepstakes Award at the fall competition for Texas college students. It's the tournament's the highest award possible for a team performance.

At the Texas Intercollegiate Forensic Association Championship Tournament in Corpus Christi, UNT students won three divisions, earning them to the top team prize.

Matthew Hernandez, a freshman broadcast journalism and political science major, and Abron Hester, a senior political science major, won the National Parliamentary Debate Association division. Individually, Hester was named fourth best speaker in the division and Hernandez was ranked sixth.

Hester also won the International Public Debate Association division.

Emily Jackson, a junior ecology major from Plano, won the Lincoln and Douglas Debate division.
