Listener experience may vary

Duos music is hard to categorize, so soak it in instead

Portland duo Talkdemonic has an epic and emotional sound that is all their own. No particular genre can describe it. Screaming violins and cellos are layered over hard-hitting, sometimes fast, percussive beats and programming.

"Some publications will try and put us in a genre, but every listener experience will be a bit different," percussionist Kevin O'Connor said.

Made up of O'Connor and Lisa Molinaro, Talkdemonic just released its fourth album, Ruins. The band had a little help at the mixing board from Isaac Brock, the Modest Mouse guitarist and vocalist who owns Glacial Pace Recordings. The album features 12 melodic tunes that are sure to engage.

"A lot of our songs start with me and synths, or really, whatever feels right," O'Connor said. "Our songs come from our experiences. They can go from joyous to extremely slow and sad, but we definitely try to bridge the gap between the different emotions that life evokes in people."

O'Connor started playing the trumpet in middle school, transitioned to guitar in high school and then began playing drums in college. He was in another band 10 years ago, then spent a year solo before forming Talkdemonic. He began playing with Molinaro, a classically trained musician, in 2004.
