Start your weekend early with the First Friday Denton arts mixer in downtown Denton. Host gallery A Creative Art Studio will start the monthly arts mixer at 7 p.m. The evening includes refreshments, musical performances by Darrin Kobetich (left) and Mark Brandt at the studio, and a strolling look at the city’s downtown galleries. While Oxide Gallery is in the process of opening in a new location, UNT on the Square, home base for the University of North Texas’ Institute for the Advancement for the Arts, will be open at 109 N. Elm St., with the just-opened “On My Own Time” exhibit. SCRAP Denton, at 215 W. Oak St., will have live music by Mountain Laurel and Poodledog. Local art will also be on display at A Creative Art Studio, 227 W. Oak St., Suite 101. Artists Abigail Miller and Tina Alvarez will demonstrate during the event, and Robin Jansen will accept topics and ideas from visitors to produce a “Five Minute Novel.” First Friday is free and runs until 10 p.m. For more information, visit http://firstfridaydenton.com .
