Are there any women who make punk rock in Denton?

From looks of the Saturday show at Rubber Gloves — a fundraiser for the three imprisoned members of the punk group Pussy Riot — it looks like the answer is no.

The three Russian women were part of a group that performed a song in Moscow’s largest church that petitioned the Virgin Mary to rid the country of Vladimir Putin. That didn’t go over so well with the bureaucracy or the Orthodox Church. The trio was sentenced to two years in political prison for the crime of “hooliganism with religious hatred.”

Two local activist organizations — the local chapter of the International Socialist Organization and the Radical Alliance for Gender Equality — are billed as the organizers of a punk solidarity show featuring the not-female (but possibly feminist) lineup of acts: the Grand Prairie area’s Electric Vengeance, Dallas-Denton four-piece Snatch Punch, Denton quintet Kid Beer, Sherman rabble-rousers Noise Tanks and McKinney’s the Kremlings.

Muckrakers of all musical tastes are invited to rage against the Russian machine on Saturday. Proceeds are earmarked for the Pussy Riot defense fund, and activist organizers will be selling Pussy Riot masks, patches and posters.

Expect short songs, lots of screaming and that weird ringing in your ears at this show.

Cover is $5 for ages 21 and older, $7 for those younger than 21. Doors open at 9 p.m. Rubber Gloves is located at 411 E. Sycamore St.
