The first arts mixer of the year is set for Friday.
The monthly local arts mixer invites local folks to visit art galleries in a casual, self-guided downtown promenade on the first Friday of each month.
Home base for the mixer is, as always, A Creative Arts Studio, at 227 W. Oak St. First Friday Denton begins at the studio at 7 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m.
The studio’s first musical act is new to the mixer, but not to performing: Dave Coulter and Friends. Afterward, local band and Twilight Tunes alumni Uver returns to perform its blend of rock and acoustic indie.
The featured visual artist for the mixer is Linka Behn, a painter who teaches through A Creative Arts Studio. Behn’s work — a mix of whimsy and realism — tends to put figures or faces in the center of the canvas.
Other First Friday Denton venues include Oxide Gallery at 211 N. Cedar St. and UNT on the Square at 109 N. Elm St. Oxide features a collection of local art by a number of artists, while UNT on the Square has focused on a retrospective exhibit of work by University of North Texas art faculty member and graphic artist David Blow.
Oxide Gallery will host its Gallery Night from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, showing paintings, photography, sculpture and jewelry. Independent Ale Works, a local craft brewer, will have samplings of its beer.
