Swedish punk band needs no translator

Vanna Inget, a Swedish punk quintet, stops in Denton on Monday night during a U.S. tour.

A scrappy Swedish punk quintet plans to mix it up at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios on Monday night.

Sardonic, whip-cracking yelps top out over the loud, swingy guitar and drum crashes when Vanna Inget takes the stage.

What sort of music fan would gravitate to this fair and svelte band of singers? The fan who needs a calming chaser for Thee Oh Sees. (The Oh Sees drive the crowd to the edge of giant wave surfing, and Vanna Inget is fine with pogo-style moshing and head banging.)

Everything is rough around the edges with Vanna Inget, because the chop is where things get interesting. And for these cats — who perform their songs mostly in Swedish — refining the band’s sound would just castrate what has to be their message: Wake up and smell the burning, people. Your days are numbered.

On recordings, lead singer Karolina Engdahl sounds like a tough chick with something to say. Live, she’s a woman driven to bellowing at the crowd and daring you to flick the chip off her shoulder — at your own risk.

The loud, twanging guitar is skate-shop worthy, and the drums are the stuff of college guys doing zero to a hundred on liquid courage.

Sounds like: Chrissie Hynde and Bjork started a side project tapping into Hynde’s skills at divining killer, hard-rocking melodies and Bjork’s metallic, audacious vocals.

Details: Vanna Inget, Occult Detective Club, the Half Truths and Pink Smoke play Monday night at Rubber Gloves, 411 E Sycamore St. Doors open at 9 p.m. Cover is $5 for patrons who can buy alcohol, $7 for those under drinking age.
