First Friday Denton, a monthly arts mixer, gets under way at 7 p.m. Friday at A Creative Art Studio, 227 W. Oak St. The studio opens the mixer with music by Jake Dester and Friends, an ensemble that approaches pop music — including songs by TLC and the Backstreet Boys — with a dash of jazz. Then comes longtime Denton player Link Chalon and his band, playing Americana and bluegrass. A Creative Art Studio’s featured artist of the month is Crystal Nelson, a painter and printmaker who teaches at the studio.
Oxide Gallery participates in the mixer with an opening-night reception for its February show. There will be live art demonstrations by artist Daren Fagan, who will work with metal, and David Schulze, who will work with acrylics. Live music will accompany free samples of beer from Independent Ale Works, a local microbrewery. The reception will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at Oxide Gallery, 211 N. Cedar St.
UNT on the Square, the headquarters for the University of North Texas Institute for the Advancement of the Arts, will also be open for the mixer. The gallery at 109 N. Elm St. presents a retrospective of UNT art faculty member David Blow, a designer and photographer.
Other businesses participating in First Friday include Denton Square Donuts, SCRAP Denton, Cherry Kandy Studio & Boutique, Howe Unique, Circa Vintage 77 and Banter Bistro — all on Oak Street west of the Square.
