Community band plays show tunes to launch Starrise

The Denton Community Band’s “Movies, Musicals & Marches” concert might make the little ones go crazy on Friday night.

The local band plays its annual Starrise series set — starting summer with songs from the big and small screen and from the parade playbook — at 8:15 p.m. Friday at the Denton Civic Center, 321 E. McKinney St.

The band will play symphonic highlights from the smash hit animated feature, Frozen (get ready to belt out “Let It Go,” kids), highlights from the hit Broadway musical Wicked (that’s a double feature for Idina Menzel fans who keep “Let It Go” and “Defying Gravity” on repeat).

The community band knows it draws an intergenerational audience. This year, that means the band will endear itself to PBS loyalists, playing the suite from Downton Abbey. Also included: music heard at Disneyland, music from the film Spartacus and more.

The Denton parks department’s Starrise series brings free summer music and dance concerts to the Civic Center on Friday evenings in June.

Coming up next on June 13: Sweet Harmony.
