Director Michael Mayer has lifted Verdi’s Rigoletto from the 16th-century Italian court to Sin City. Denton residents can see the opera in a 7 p.m. screening Wednesday at the Cinemark 15 at Vista Ridge Mall, 2401 S. Stemmons Freeway in Lewisville.
No one can say the Metopolitan Opera has a fear of innovation. Tony Award-winning director Mayer puts in Polish tenor Piotr Beczala as the Duke — an amoral lounge singer in this Las Vegas version.
Serbian baritone Zeljko Lucic sings the title role of the Duke’s world-weary comedian, while German soprano Diana Damrau portrays the innocent Gilda, Rigoletto’s daughter and the object of desire for the lusting Duke. Slovakian bass Stefan Kocan sings the role of Sparafucile, Belarusian mezzo-soprano Oksana Volkova makes her Met debut as Maddalena. The production is conducted by Michele Mariotti.
The screening is part of “The Met: Live in HD” series, which brings encore broadcasts of performances to multiplexes.
