Miriam Studios’ annual “Artastic Camp” opens on July 14 and runs throughout the month in Denton.
The camps teach students hands-on learning in a survey of visual arts. Morning camps are 10 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday on July 14-17, July 21-24 and July 28-31.
Camps are also offered in the mornings and afternoons July 16-21. Morning camps are 9 a.m. to noon, and afternoon camps are 1 to 4 p.m. on those dates.
The camp is led by studio owner Cathy Mitchell, who teaches art at McKinney High School.
“What I’ve been doing they have a craft project where they made a flower out of recycled trash, and that’s their project for four days,” Mitchell said. “If they come two weeks, they do four projects. I have a different curriculum every year, so I can offer something new to the kids who come every year. This year, I’ve had them casting their hands in glass.”
Mitchell said campers can specialize if they want to focus on a medium or technique.
“I have some students who just want to do clay, and they can do that,” she said. “I had some high school students who wanted to get ahead in [Advanced Placement], and just wanted to study painting. So I taught them to paint.”
Mitchell is prepared to lead small groups — from six to eight campers of different ages — in painting, drawing, ceramics and printmaking.
Mitchell earned her bachelor’s degree in painting and drawing at the University of North Texas. She studied ceramics as a graduate student. She has taught art for 30 years, and sells mugs at the Denton Community Market most Saturdays. She hosts the yearly camps at her studio, located at 1512 Panhandle St. Mitchell’s instruction can help Advanced Placement art students create pieces for their portfolios.
