‘La Cage’ holds and spills family secrets

Greater Lewisville Community Theatre is marking the summer with a lot of heart and a little swish.

The local company opens Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Herman’s musical comedy La Cage aux Folles on Friday at the theater, 160 W. Main St. in Old Town Lewisville.

The musical finds two unlikely families joined by a young couple in love. Jean-Michel is the son of Georges, who runs the dazzling nightclub La Cage aux Folles. And Jean-Michel has considered Georges’ longtime companion, Albin, a mother of sorts. Albin is best known as the drag queen Zaza, the star attraction at La Cage.

Jean-Michel means to marry Anne Dindon, whose father is the head of the Tradition, Family and Morality Party and is out to shut down the drag clubs in the city. To tie the knot without getting tied in knots, Jean-Michel begs Albin to make himself scarce and let his mother, Sybil, step in and complete a more traditional family portrait. The deception leads to a comedic snare, and truth wins out in the end (after sass, song and dance).

The production opens this weekend and runs through Aug. 3 with performances at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays.

Tickets cost $20 for adults, $17 for ages 65 and older and ages 28 and younger. For reservations, call 972-221-7469.
