Denton Community Theatre closes its run of the oh-so-pink and incurably hopeful Legally Blonde this weekend.
The musical comedy is a buffet of Americana. There’s a bevy of buxom sorority sisters sporting Pinterest-worthy hair (read: long and meticulously messy), dance numbers so buoyant they’re feats of athleticism and a libretto that sacrifices none of the original film’s (like totally) California-speak.
Director Clay White lets Kristi Smith carry the show as the perennially perky Elle Woods — a strenuous job that requires the actress to blaze from scene to scene (and what seems like three shows worth of costume changes) in more than one pair of sky-high heels. He stocked the stage with energetic young performers who flesh out the winking script with plenty of heart, and one pretty convincing Jamaican Patois.
Legally Blonde is based on the 2001 blockbuster film starring Reese Witherspoon. Elle is a Zeta Nu sister with Malibu Barbie good looks and eyes for only one fraternity dreamboat: Warner. Elle is all set to start picking china patterns for her gotta-happen nuptials when Warner dumps her. Warner insists he can’t marry Elle. If he wants to be a senator by the time he’s 30, he needs “a Jackie, not a Marilyn.”
Stunned and beyond heartbroken, Elle decides to follow Warner to Harvard Law School. Maybe a makeunder (from bombshell to attorney-chic) will show the one who got away that she might be a bubbly blonde, but she can be serious. The musical by Laurence O’Keefe, Nell Benjamin and Heather Hach is suitable for all ages.
Jaqueline Butt is the production’s choreographer, and Rebecca Lowry is the musical director and pianist. Derek Whitner and Victor Newman Brockwell designed the costumes.
