Denton takes it back to a time when country was dangerous

The music scene is going old school this weekend in Denton.

The Raised Right Men — a motley collection of Denton’s best-loved songwriters and musicians Justin Collins (Hares on the Mountain), Brian Wright, Hank W. Early, Andy Rogers (Boxcar Bandits) and Grady Don Sandlin (Boxcar Bandits, RTB2) — host Denton Does Waylon at 9 p.m. today at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St. The free show features covers of music by Jennings, the godfather of outlaw country.

Local indie folk musician Mathew Grigsby revives his habit of staging tributes at Denton’s folk hotspot, Banter Bistro.

Grigsby is set to host an evening of Hank Williams on Saturday at the Bistro. Williams, sometimes called the “Hillbilly Shakespeare,” wrote a revered collection of outlaw country songs, the best of which will be restyled by local musicians Grigsby, Aaron Price, Olivia Justice Countryman and Melissa Ratley of Denton, as well as Plano’s Kaiser von Flint.
