Students in theater school bring to life the tale of Pinocchio

Denton Community Theatre’s Theatre School presents Pinocchio Commedia, a play for children and young people by Johnny Simons, this weekend at the Campus Theatre.

The comedy is told in the style of commedia dell’arte, an Italian Renaissance form that presents a tale told by stock characters in a traveling band of performers: harlequin, ingenue, juvenile and villain.

Directed by retired Denton public school theater teacher John Evarts, the show is especially good for children given the commedia’s physical comedy, witty lines and physical storytelling.

The story retells Carlo Collodi’s famous story of Pinocchio, in which a marionette puppet longs to become a real boy so that he might be cherished by Geppetto, the elderly woodcarver who created him. The theater school uses brightly colored costumes and handmade Italian masks on the young actors performing the play.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. Tickets cost $6. For reservations, call 940-382-1915.
