Young and grateful

D. Smiley’s ‘Appreciation’ is for all his supporters

Denton’s D. Smiley dropped the first track from his latest release, The Young Don Appreciation EP, at the end of 2012.

“Smoke One,” featuring CLV, was a smooth drag and puff in the general direction of D. Smiley’s naysayers.

The local hip-hop artist just released the whole EP this week. Hip-hop fans can hear some of it live at MacBroadz’s “The I35 Divide,” a jam-packed bill at Hailey’s Club on Wednesday.

D. Smiley is the key player in the MacBroadz crew, and the rapper behind the label and production company of the same name.

The gig at Hailey’s features Denton’s Pudge, who will perform songs from his first solo record, One of Those Nights, as well as JLD, Dallas acts Brain Gang and Aeronotiqz and headliners Subkulture Patriots from Austin.

What can you expect from The Young Don Appreciation EP? Fat, lazy beats and tight, solid verses that sometimes change tempo when you least expect it.

As for the content, Smiley has come into a newfound confidence in more than his art. He’s a businessman who means to brand his music and his clothes. The standout track, “Repeat,” produced by Diamond Style, claims the artist’s rightful spot on the local and regional rap scene.

Sounds like: a grown man’s kind of party. Grab a drink and have a puff or two, but this good time isn’t for ignorant brats who just want to pose.

Details: Doors open at 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hailey’s, 122 W. Mulberry St. Cover is $10 at the door, $12 for those younger than 21. Tickets cost $7 in advance, available at .
