Theater group dives into new territory with ‘Bluefish Cove’
Denton Community Theatre opens the romantic comedy Last Summer at Bluefish Cove next weekend as part of the 2013 season at the PointBank Black Box Performing Arts Center.
Written by Jane Chambers, Bluefish Cove tells the story of the freshly divorced Eva, who heads to Bluefish Cove for a sort of personal retreat following the end of her marriage.
What she doesn’t know at first is that the seven women vacationing at the beach are a group of lesbian friends cherishing what could be the last summer they spend vacationing together. Eva is adopted into the group and is surprised by her growing attraction to Lil, a woman who is coming to terms with her place among her friends.
Sharon Veselic returns to direct Denton Community Theatre’s production.
Bluefish Cove, first staged in 1980, is considered to be one of the very first plays about lesbians and their relationships produced for the mainstream stage. Actress Jean Smart (Designing Women) was discovered in her performance in the role of Lil.
Performance will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18-19, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20.
The Black Box is located at 318 E. Hickory St. For reservations, call the Campus Theatre box office at 940-382-1915 or visit www.dentoncommunitytheatre.com .
