Denton youth troupe stages ‘The Hobbit’

Young local actors mix magic and myth this weekend in The Hobbit, performed by students in Denton Community Theatre’s Theatre School.

Based on the popular novel by J.R.R. Tolkien and adapted by Markland Taylor, The Hobbit tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit from Middle Earth.

Baggins’ takes a journey to the lair of the dragon Smaug, where he hopes to gather a share of jealously guarded treasure.

In the stage adaptation for all ages, the audience will meet Bilbo’s traveling companions: proud dwarf Thorin Oakenshield; the nomadic wizard Gandalf; honorable archer Bard the Bowman; the ruined hobbit, Gollum; goblins, trolls, giant spiders, royalty and Smaug himself.

The theater school offers school-year and summer courses in acting, technical theater, movement and more for ages 18 and younger.

The play is directed by Nancy Chumbley, former director of Argyle High School’s theater arts department.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St.

Tickets cost $8, and seating is general admission.

For tickets, call 940-382-1915 or visit http://dentoncommunitytheatre.com.
