It took a while, but Denton finally staged a New Year's Eve bash for 2017, with the proceeds benefiting two longstanding local nonprofits.

Lil'  D NYE returns to ring in 2018 at 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31 at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 E. Hickory St.

The event benefits the Greater Denton Arts Council and the United Way of Denton County.

The party's theme is the Roaring Twenties. Patrons can test their luck at casino games. Organizers have brought back the roulette, craps and blackjack tables in the Meadows Gallery. Or they can join the NTX Roofing poker tournament. Risk-takers can ride into 2018 in the high roller lounge, where they can join high-limit poker tournaments and enjoy an open bar.

Barley & Board will provide hors d'oeuvres and Metzler's will provide cocktails. Denton composer and arranger David J. Pierce will conduct his holiday orchestra. DJ Woodtronic will spin pop hits and the occasional oldie (if you consider David Bowie or Prince oldies.)

If you plan to drink, don't worry about hailing an Uber or a Lyft. Best Western Premiere is offering a free shuttle service to and from the event to make sure attendees get home safe.

Proceeds from the New Year's bash benefit the local United Way, a nonprofit that funds programs that help children, families, veterans, people experiencing homelessness and people affected by mental illness. The event also benefits the arts council, which supports visual and performing arts through two public galleries, music performances and educational programming.

Tickets cost $100 for singles, including two drink tickets and $250 worth of "fun money" to bet at the casino tables; $175 for couples, also including two drink tickets and $250 worth of "fun money."

High roller tickets cost $150 for singles and $250 for couples. High roller tickets include $500 of fun money and access to the VIP Lounge and high roller poker tables.

The event raised nearly $25,000 for the two nonprofits in 2017.
