Former FUMC Denton pastor is now bishop

A former senior pastor of First United Methodist Church of Denton was recently elected to serve the denomination’s Arkansas Conference.

The Rev. Gary Mueller, who served the local congregation from 1995 to 2002, is the bishop-elect from the North Texas Conference and has been appointed to lead the Arkansas Conference churches through the next leadership term of four years.

Mueller, 58, leaves his post as the senior pastor of First United Methodist Church of Plano. He was consecrated bishop in a ceremony in Oklahoma City on Saturday.

His assignment is effective Sept. 1.

Bishops lead United Methodist pastors, educators and lay leaders in carrying out the principle focus of the denomination, which includes fighting the diseases of poverty through global health ministries, ministering to the poor, directing new churches and revitalizing established congregations and developing leaders who will serve the church and the world. Bishops also preserve the faith and doctrine of the denomination and hold conference congregations accountable to church laws.

The Arkansas Conference includes congregations in Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico and Oklahoma.
