The following are a list of events celebrating Veterans Day:
Flower Mound celebration: 1 to 3 p.m., Flower Mound High School, 3411 Peters Colony. A family picnic will be held from 1 to 2 p.m., with free hot dogs, cake, and lemonade. A Veterans Review during the Veterans Day ceremony will include an expected 200 local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and JROTC units parading before the veterans in uniform.
Air Force Junior ROTC salute to Denton County veterans: Starting at 7:20 a.m., Guyer High School, 7501 Teasley Lane, Denton. Cadets will serve breakfast tacos and coffee in the school cafeteria, with a ceremony at the school’s flag pole beginning at 8:30 a.m. There will be a guest speaker, and Guyer students and AFJROTC cadets will form a line and personally thank all present veterans at the ceremony.
McNair Elementary Veterans Day reception: Starting at 8 a.m., 1212 Hickory Creek Road, Denton. Veterans will be invited to speak about where they served, what branch of the military they were in and what their favorite tour of duty was. McNair fifth-graders will read poems about each branch of the military, and the entire grade will sing patriotic songs. Veterans are encouraged to stay and enjoy doughnuts and juice.
Denton High School Student Council tribute: Starting at 8:15 a.m., 1007 Fulton Street. A free continental breakfast will be served in Room 106 by the Denton High Student Council, and a flag ceremony by the Air Force Junior ROTC will follow in the front of the school at 8:15 a.m. A procession will then lead back to the school auditorium for music by the DHS Lab Band One Jazz Ensemble at 9:45 a.m. The DHS National Honor Society will play host to a special Veterans Day program at 10 a.m., with performances by JROTC, the chorale, the orchestra, the band and theater students. Keynote speaker will be Bob Sikes, a retired U.S. Marine Corps major.
Houston Elementary Veterans Day assembly: Starting at 8:15 a.m. in the school cafeteria, 3100 Teasley Lane, Denton. Local veterans will be honored.
Ryan High annual veterans salute: Students will gather at the school’s flagpole at 8:30 a.m. to greet veterans while the Ryan Air Force Junior ROTC presents the colors. Trumpeters will perform the national anthem, taps and other patriotic songs. Veterans will be able to share memories and stories with students following the presentation. Ryan is located at 5101 E. McKinney St., Denton.
McMath Middle School Veterans Day program: Starting at 9 a.m. in the school cafeteria, 1900 Jason Drive, Denton. Students from sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade social studies classes will deliver presentations, while the McMath cheerleaders and student-led Junior ROTC groups show their appreciation to Denton County veterans. The McMath Tiger Band will also perform.
Special Memorial Service: A 30-minute ceremony at Ernest W. Dallas Jr. Veterans Memorial Park, 6100 Sun Ray Drive, will include the laying of stones for Vietnam vets and one for war dogs.
Veterans Day Ceremony on the Square: 11 a.m. to noon, Courthouse on the Square, Denton. The Denton County Veterans Service Office, in coordination with the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University, will conduct the Veterans Day Ceremony on the Square on the courthouse lawn.
