New form of land management studied

North Central Texas College science professor Lisa Bellows recently returned from a week of training in Albuquerque, N.M., with Holistic Management International.

The training session, which was made possible by a collaboration with Dixon Water Foundation, produces educators certified to teach holistic management.

Holistic Management International educates people to manage land for a sustainable future through a variety of programs and services designed to educate and support farmers, ranchers and land stewards in their efforts to enhance the land through holistic management, a whole farm/ranch planning system that naturally mimics nature.

The training in New Mexico is just the beginning for Bellows, who will be focusing on independent training from this point forward in order to become an HMI-certified educator.

Bellows has taught in the science department at NCTC for 19 years.

Dixon Water Foundation is alocal ranch, near Leo, utilizing the Holistic Management International approach.

Bellows obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology from Texas Woman’s University and her doctorate in science education from Texas Christian University. She is the director of the Thomsen Nature Preserve in Montague County. She plans to incorporate much of her training into the pasture management class she teaches at NCTC. She also will share her knowledge with a group of teachers over a two-day period this summer.

For more information about holistic management or the NCTC science department, contact Bellows at 940-668-4346 or lbellows@nctc.edu .
