Teachers learn to bring research into class

Eleven middle and high school teachers will go from instructors to researchers this summer during a six-week National Science Foundation program at UNT.

The 11 teachers from the Dallas-Fort Worth area are participating in UNT’s Research Experiences for Teachers in Sensor Networks program, which started this week. The program gives teachers the opportunity to conduct engineering-based research projects while also learning how to translate their experiences into innovative classroom lessons.

The program is funded by a $499,932 grant from the National Science Foundation that started in 2011 and will run through 2013.

This is the second year that UNT has offered the program. UNT also ran a pilot program in 2009. This year’s participants will use electrical engineering concepts and tools to investigate air and water quality, the impact of emissions on the area’s carbon footprint and the ability to equip robots with depth-capable vision.

The 11 participants come from six different school districts and teach subjects from chemistry and algebra to aerospace engineering and aquatic science, and they are:

•  Lori Wolf, Navo Middle School in Denton ISD

•  Zachary Bunn, R.L. Turner High School in Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD

•  Jose Guerrero, R.L. Turner High School

•  Jesse C. Bell, Skyline High School in Dallas ISD

•  Kimberly Garrett, Northwest High School in Northwest ISD

•  Elizabeth Georgette Jordan, Emmett J. Conrad High School in Dallas ISD

•  Blaine Chamberlain, Newman Smith High School in Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD

•  Ashley Sink, Northwest High School

•  Karl Gscheidle, R.L. Turner High School

•  Donn Arnold, Krum High School in Krum ISD

•  Sharon Wood, Marcus High School in Lewisville ISD

Wood and Arnold, who both participated last year and in the 2009 pilot, will serve as master teachers, helping the other participants make the most of the program.

Both teachers have integrated lessons related to the research projects they completed last year into their courses.

The teachers will be mentored by UNT faculty: Shengli Fu, Xinrong Li and Kamesh Namaduri from the electrical engineering department, Rudi Thompson and David Hoeinghaus from the biology department and Yan Huang from the computer science and engineering department.

Professor coaching U.S. debate team in Japan

Brian A. Lain, a communication studies professor and the director of UNT’s Debate Team, has been named coach of the American National Debate Team. The team, which includes students from the University of Maryland and the University of Michigan, is participating in non-competitive exhibition debates against students at colleges and high schools in Japan through June 26.

The American National Debate Team is touring Japan representing the National Communication Association’s Committee on International Discussion and Debate.

The committee promotes international understanding of the practice of communication through discussion and debates between U.S. students and students from other nations. It began sponsoring international student debate exchanges in 1922, with debaters from Oxford and Cambridge universities and debaters from U.S. universities providing exhibitions in each other’s nations on successive years.

The committee expanded the biannual swap to Japan in 1967, and began a series in Eastern European nations in 2000.

Lain has been a UNT faculty member and the director of debate at UNT since 2002. Under his direction, UNT Debate Team members qualified eight out of 10 years for the National Debate Tournament, which is considered to be the most prestigious tournament in competitive policy debate for U.S. college and university students. UNT students have also qualified each year since 2002 for the Cross Examination Debate Association National Tournament.

In 2012, the UNT team placed among the top 30 teams at the National Debate Tournament. It also placed among the top eight teams at the 2012 Cross Examination Debate Association National Tournament, which recognized UNT’s debate program with its National Public Sphere Award and named two UNT students to its All American Debate Squad.
