Faculty member earns Marie Curie fellowship

Ila Manuj, associate professor of logistics, headed to Austria to study supply chain complexity for the Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship by the European Commission, according to a news release.

The 16-month project will help her better understand, define and measure the complexity of a supply chain.

She will study at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria at the logistics competence center at the Steyr campus.

Students leaving to study in Cuba

For the first time in more than 10 years, a study abroad group from UNT will travel to Cuba this summer to study sustainability.

From May 28 to June 11, 20 students led by four faculty members will travel for the program to look at how the government works to protect the environment.

Students will attend classes at the University of Havana to learn about the local population, geography and how the culture and arts have helped fuel local sustainability efforts.

Researchers published in national magazine

Professors Richard Dixon and Fang Chen will have their research on the biofuel waste product called ligin published in Science.

The research was conducted through a partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s BioEnergy Science Center and coordinated through the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.

The paper outlines how companies can commercialize and profit from ligin, which is the substance that makes plants woody and firm.

Registration open for string workshop

The College of Music and Dallas Symphony Orchestra musicians will team up to teach master classes, private lessons and chamber music coaching this year at the first Summer String Institute.

Violinists, cellists and violists at the collegiate and pre-collegiate levels can enroll in the program, which will aim to help musicians through an intense learning environment with personal attention, clinics and performance opportunities, according to a news release.

Applicants can apply by the end of the day Friday at https://music.unt.edu/ssi/.
