Best in class: 2010-11 area valedictorians and salutatorians

The Denton Record-Chronicle submitted forms to area high schools to learn about their brightest graduates. Students were asked what college they plan to attend, their intended major, their most memorable moment in high school and their top three scholarships.

 

 

ARGYLE HIGH SCHOOL

Conor Lynch

Valedictorian

Intended major: chemical engineering

Activities: band, University Interscholastic League academics, National Honor Society

Memorable moment: having my friends campaign for me on a whim to be homecoming king - and then winning.

Scholarships: Texas Math and Science Coaches Association, third place, Top Gun, $900; Southland Paper Mills Foundation, $2,000; valedictorian tuition exemption, $10,000

Wesley Sky King

Salutatorian

Memorable moment: winning the 2010 Whataburger Basketball Tournament by beating the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 teams in the state in Class AAA

Scholarships: ACU Chancellor's Award, $40,000; ACU departmental scholarship and award, $14,000; ACU Salutatorian Scholarship, $1,000

 

 

AUBREY HIGH SCHOOL

Carely Ibarra

Memorable moment: going to one-act play state sophomore and senior year

DENTON CALVARY ACADEMY

Ashley Elise Chamberlain

Memorable moment: finishing my last track meet with all my friends, family, teammates and coaches.

Amanda Talbot

Memorable moment: senior trip!

Genevieve M. Edgell

KRUM HIGH SCHOOL

Mary Elizabeth Derryberry

Valedictorian

College: University of Texas at Dallas

Intended major: My intended major is in the engineering field. I am going to decide between electrical, chemical and computer engineering.

Activities: varsity tennis, choir, FFA, student council; blood donor; worked at Sears and Sports Authority.

Memorable moment: Last year at the state team tennis tournament after we just finished playing our second dual meet of the day, I remember how we all stormed McKenna, the tie-breaker of the entire event, on the courts. She ran away, but we chased her and hugged her, giggling with excitement. It was the first time Krum had ever placed in the top four teams at state.

Scholarships: Southern Methodist University Provost Scholar and J. Lindsay Embrey Engineering Scholarship; University of Texas at Dallas Academic Excellence Scholarship (full tuition and fees for four years plus housing allowance); and University of North Texas academic scholarship

Okeoghene Omoefe Orieka

Salutatorian

Parents: Daniel Orieka and Joyce Orieka

College: Rice University

Intended majors: civil and environmental engineering

Activities: student council, Key Club, Business Professionals of America, National Honor Society; UIL academics; junior varsity tennis; class officer and senior class president.

Memorable moment: My most memorable moment of high school was when I participated in the Mr. KHS pageant. Even though I was embarrassed to do it and initially declined, I remembered that the main goal of the pageant was to raise money for our Project Graduation. I competed and won third place, and the pageant raised hundreds of dollars.

Scholarships: Rice Trustee Distinguished Scholarship, Teagle Foundation scholarship and Carnegie Mellon Undergraduate Grant

 

 

LAKE DALLAS HIGH SCHOOL

Megan Moore

Valedictorian

College: University of Oklahoma

Intended major: secondary, math education

Activities: basketball, track, National Honor Society and Science Club

Memorable moment: winning first place in the district 100 meter hurdles (freshman year)

Omar Hasan

Memorable moment: being honored by my teachers at the May 17 award ceremony

Savannah Lynn Ewing

Activities: softball, marching band, jazz band, drum line, Science Bowl, Science Olympiad, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, horseback riding and flying small airplanes

Memorable moment: When the softball team beat Ursuline Academy during a district game. The game was tied for most of the game, but we were able to pull it out in extra innings.

Scholarships: valedictorian tuition exemption, Lechner Scholarship and Opportunity Award scholarship

Hunter Dansby

Memorable moment: senior night basketball game against Trinity Christian Academy-Addison when I hit six three-pointers in a row.
