Student wins national singing contest
Trinity Trout, a seventh-grader at McMath Middle School, was recently named one of three winners for a national contest sponsored by international pop star Avril Lavigne on Instagram.
Trinity sang an 11-second a cappella cover version of a Lavigne song using Instagram video and bested more than 600 entries from across the country. As the contest winner, Trinity won a trip to New York City and tickets to Lavigne’s show at the Highline Ballroom.
Lavigne is a Canadian singer-songwriter who has earned eight Grammy nominations and has sold more than 35 million albums in her decade-long career.

Nelson athlete named to all-state team
Haley Tippett, a student at Nelson High School, was named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-State volleyball team.
NHS senior named to Youth Senate
Sachin Gupta, a senior at Nelson High School, is one of two students from Texas recently named to the U.S. Senate Youth Program.
The Hearst Foundation awarded Gupta a $5,000 undergraduate college scholarship and a trip to Washington, D.C., where he will meet the president, dine with the vice president and enjoy other opportunities the program offers.
NISD sets sixth annual Reindeer Romp
Northwest schools will conduct the sixth annual Reindeer Romp on Saturday at Nelson High School, 2775 Bobcat Blvd. in Trophy Club.
The one-mile fun run begins at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K-race begins at 9 a.m. Proceeds benefit the NISD physical education department. For more information, go to www.nisdreindeerromp.com.
Mobile app update set for January
Northwest schools will release an update to the district’s mobile application on Jan. 22.
The update will include the ability to check student grades, attendance, lunch account balance and more. The app is available on Google Play and the Apple iTunes Store. For more information, go to www.nisdtx.org/mobileapp.
Volunteers needed for Northwest Reads
The Northwest Independent School District Partners in Education program is seeking volunteers for the sixth annual Northwest Reads from 9 to 10 a.m. Jan. 23.
Participants will choose from a variety of books to read to pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students at one of the school district’s 17 elementary schools.
This event provides community members with an opportunity to inspire young NISD students to become lifelong readers. For more information, call 817-215-0172.

Christmas events set through Dec. 17
Liberty Christian School will conduct a series of Christmas events beginning Thursday and continuing through Dec. 17.
The school is located at 1301 S. U.S. Highway 377 in Argyle.
The programs include:
Saturday, 6 p.m.: Performances by the middle and upper school choir and fifth- through 12th-grade band.
Sunday, 3 p.m.: Spotlight Christmas Show (rescheduled from Dec. 7).
Monday, 6 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.: Fifth-Grade Musical Theater (two performance times and two groups of performers).
Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.: Early Childhood Education (preschool and prekindergarten) and kindergarten program.
Tuesday 7:30 p.m.: First- and second-grade program.
Dec. 19, 7 p.m.: Third- and fourth-grade program.
