Freshman First Day to kick off school year

The school district will host Freshman First Day, an orientation for incoming ninth-graders, on Aug. 22.

“Denton ISD’s Freshman First Day program ensures these students get an early, first-hand look at high school life at each of their respective campuses before the rest of their classmates,” according to a district media release. “The program will also allow first-year high school students [to] attend classes and walk the halls on their own, allowing them to get acclimated to the larger campuses.

“Freshman First Day also introduces participants to various school clubs, organizations and programs without the added stress of a typical first day of school.”

Herschel Walker, former Heisman Trophy winner, professional football player and mixed martial artist, is the event’s keynote speaker. The collegiate Hall of Fame running back is slated to speak at 10 a.m. at Denton High School, 11:30 a.m. at Ryan High School and 1 p.m. at Guyer High School. Walker’s appearance is sponsored by University Behavioral Health of Denton, according to the district.

Students attending the event can purchase lunch at the respective schools or bring food from home, according to the district. Transportation will be provided for students eligible for bus service.

Denton Public School Foundation

Annual Barbell Bash and dash set for Aug. 23

The second annual Back to School Barbell Bash and Dash is slated for Aug. 23.

The event, hosted by CrossFit 940 and the Denton Public School Foundation, is a fundraiser for the foundation.

It also promotes “physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle among school administrators, teachers, parents and students,” according to a district media release.

“Three-person teams [two male, one female] from across the Dallas-Fort Worth area will participate in a CrossFit competition featuring aerobic and strength-training exercises,” according to the release. “Each team will complete the designated exercise, with the one that finishes the most amount of repetitions in the shortest amount of time declared Barbell Bash champions. This year’s event will also feature a 5K and welcomes runners of all ages and skill level.”

Division winners will be eligible for $1,500 in prize money. All other funds collected at the event will go to the foundation.

Since 1997, the foundation has assisted Denton County families and awarded more than $2 million in grants and scholarships to students, teachers and staff.
