Members of American Legion Riders Post 71 have announced a “Field of Honor” of U.S. flags to pay tribute to past or present veterans.
Flags can be purchased for $20 by picking up a form at American Legion Post 71, 2501 Spencer Road in Denton. A yellow tab bearing the name of the honoree will be featured with each flag purchased. People can also choose to honor emergency services personnel or anyone important to them.
The flags will be flown from May 22-29 in the field next to the post.
A flag dedication ceremony is planned for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 26. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m., and immediately after the dedication ceremony, a pig roast luncheon will be served.
Flag request forms are located by the flag retirement box at the post. The post will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. the next two weekends to take Field of Honor orders. Flag request forms can be downloaded at www.txlegionpost71.org.
Dedicated flags will be available for pickup from 3 to 6 p.m. beginning May 29 and continuing through June 1. Proceeds from the program will be used to assist local veterans, their families and other community projects.

Library offers program on making floral Mother’s Day cards
Denton’s Emily Fowler Central Library will offer visitors a little help in making a floral Mother’s Day card during a program at 4 p.m. Friday.
Garden Culture Club members will help attendees make cards for their moms using pressed flowers. The program is best for ages 4 and older.

Church schedules free family movie Friday night
A neighborhood movie night is planned at 8:45 p.m. Friday at Lifegate Church, 3350 Deerwood Parkway in Denton.
The free event will feature a screening of Soul Surfer on the church lawn, but in the event of inclement weather, it will be moved inside the church.
Attendees should bring lawn chairs and bug spray. Families can also bring their own picnics or buy popcorn, candy and soft drinks for $1 each. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited.

Spring motorcycle show, ride planned Saturday
The Texas Independent Touring Society’s annual spring motorcycle show and ride is planned Saturday as a benefit for breast cancer research and treatment.
Entry fee is $20 for the bike show and poker run, and registration will begin at 9 a.m. at 115 Industrial St. in Denton.
Last bike out will be at 10 a.m., and last bike in will be at 1 p.m. Participant judging and live music will begin at 1 p.m. A $100 prize will be presented for best of show and best poker hand, and awards will go to first and second places in six categories.

Group to conduct cheer signups, football tryouts
Denton County Raiders Select Sports and Cheerleading Association will have football tryouts and cheer registration/uniform fitting Saturday at Game On Athletics, 2686 Old Alton Road in Denton.
Cheer signups will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for ages 4-12, and all skill levels are welcome. Cost is $100, which includes a complete uniform.

Football tryouts will be open to ages 5-12 (as of Aug. 1), and athletes should have shorts, T-shirts, water and cleats, if possible.

The Denton Public Library has planned a volunteer fair from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at South Branch Library, 3228 Teasley Lane.

Park to host activities for families on Saturday
A ranger talk, a kid’s fishing event and a sunset hike are planned at Ray Roberts Lake State Park on Saturday.
The “Go Fish!” kid’s fishing event will be from 8 a.m. to noon at the park’s Johnson Branch Unit.
The ranger talk will be offered at 1 p.m. at the Isle du Bois Unit’s interpretive center. The subject will be creating casts of animal tracks.
The sunset hike will begin at 7:45 p.m. on the Lost Pines Nature Trail at the Isle du Bois Unit.
All park programs are open to the public and free with regular park entrance fee, which is $7 for people 12 and older.

Environmental area plans bird walk, nature walk
The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area will offer a bird walk and a nature walk Saturday.
The bird walk, for ages 10 and older, will be at 7:30 a.m. Cost is $2 in addition to the regular gate fee of $5 per person.
The nature walk will begin at 10 a.m. This walk is also open to ages 10 and older, and there is a $2 program fee in addition to the regular gate admission of $5 per person.

Bach Society Choir slates Mother’s Day concert
The Denton Bach Society Choir will perform a Mother’s Day Concert at 4 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 2200 N. Bell Ave.
The concert will feature works by Brahms, Faure, Bruckner, Kreutzer and the song cycle “Songs of Nature” by Dvorak in translations by Harold Heiberg. Heiberg, a retired faculty member of the University of North Texas College of Music, has translated dozens of compositions from many languages.
The concert will be a tribute to Heiberg in celebration of his 90th birthday.
Sunday’s concert will also feature winners of the Denton Bach Society Competition for High School Musicians
