Les Cockrell: Lighthouse to reach out in Aubrey

The Prazim Ministries Lighthouse, an outreach of a ministry established by John and Mary Holland in 2001, is scheduled to open at 10 a.m. Friday at 210 S. Main St. in Aubrey.

The Lighthouse will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and will offer furniture, jewelry, decorative items, Western items and more for suggested donations.

The main focus of the Lighthouse will be ministry, and regular programs will include women’s ministry, quilting for seniors and a dining program for seniors. Other activities also will be featured each month. A schedule will be posted in the front window of the facility and on the Prazim Ministries Lighthouse Facebook page.

Donations are still being accepted for the Lighthouse, and items needed include purses, jewelry, silk flowers, greenery, decorative items and furniture in good condition. No clothing is accepted, except for wedding dresses and formal dresses. For more information, call 940-594-6724.

 

Garage sale to benefit therapeutic equestrian center

A garage sale to benefit Born 2 Be Therapeutic Equestrian Center is planned Saturday and Sunday at 2324 Yorkshire St. in Denton, according to Mary Gwinner, director of the center.

Hours will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days, and shoppers should find plenty to interest them, Gwinner said.

“We have a lot of good stuff,” she said.

All proceeds benefit the center, which is located in Aubrey and provides safe and affordable therapeutic horseback riding and carriage driving programs for children and adults with disabilities.

Midwife/herbalist set to address herb society

Eveith Miller, a midwife/herbalist, will be guest speaker for the Saturday meeting of the Denton Herb Society.

The meeting will begin at 10 a.m., and it will be at Denton’s North Branch Library, 3020 N. Locust St.

Miller will give a presentation on tincture formulas. Topics will include tincture benefits and how they are made. Miller also teaches an herbal medicine studies class.

Aubrey chamber slates casino night fundraiser

The Aubrey 380 Chamber of Commerce will have its annual casino night fundraiser beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Aubrey Area Library, 226 Countryside Drive.

The event will feature a dinner buffet provided by Raphael’s Restaurant, and casino games will be provided by Vegas Connection. There will also be a silent auction.

A Texas hold ’em tournament, limited to 50 players, will be offered for an additional fee of $20 per player and will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tournament check-in will be at 6:15 p.m.

Preschool plans annual pancake supper

“Peace, Love & Pancakes,” Cornerstone Cooperative Preschool’s annual pancake supper and silent auction, is planned at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the Monroe Gym at Denton’s First United Methodist Church, 201 S. Locust St.

Admission is $5 per person, free for ages 3 and younger.

The event will feature photo booths, music and other family entertainment.

Guided hike planned Saturday at state park

A guided hike is planned at 11 a.m. Saturday along the Randy Bell Trail at the Isle du Bois Unit of Ray Roberts Lake State Park.

Hikers will meet at the Wild Plum parking area.

The hike is free with regular park admission, which is $7 for those ages 12 and older.

Raminator monster truck scheduled to visit

The Raminator monster truck is scheduled to be on site at Classic of Denton Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, 4984 S. Interstate 35E, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

There will be no cost to take a look at the vehicle during its local visit.

Saturday sale to benefit Guyer High Wildcat Band

The Wildcat Band Secondhand Safari sale will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Guyer High School to support the band.

The sale will be in the “B” lot of the high school, 7501 Teasley Lane. Spaces are available for $20 to sell items, and admission is free to shoppers. Food and beverages will be available.

Denton resident set for Walk MS: Dallas 2013

Denton resident Cordia St. Clair and a team of her family members and friends will be among those scheduled to participate in Walk MS: Dallas 2013 on Saturday in Addison, according to a press release from the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The walk will begin at Addison Circle Park. This is St. Clair’s seventh year to help raise money toward finding a cure for multiple sclerosis and to serve as the team’s captain.

Symphony to offer ‘Peter and the Wolf’ on Sunday

The Lewisville Lake Symphony’s Family Popcorn Concert, Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, will be presented at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Frederick P. Herring Recreation Center, 191 Civic Circle in Lewisville.

The concert will feature Chip Waggoner from Fox 4 as the narrator and dancers from LakeCities Ballet.

Youngsters from pre-kindergarten through third grade should enjoy hearing the story, while learning a few things about music along the way.

The kids get to sprawl on gym mats right in front of the action.

Parents and grandparents will be seated in bleachers. Free popcorn will be available.

Environmental area to offer spring break camp

The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area is signing up youngsters ages 9-12 for its first Spring Break Adventure Camp.

The registration deadline is Monday and the fee is $185 per child. Campers will have opportunities to go fishing, explore a pond, kayak, investigate insects, blaze trails, play games, create nature art and more at this weeklong camp, which will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., March 11-15.

Preschool plans supper, silent auction fundraiser

The 27th annual Mexican supper and silent auction to benefit Denton Christian Preschool is planned from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in the Erwin Hall gym of First Presbyterian Church, 1114 W. University Drive.

Tickets, priced at $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and younger, are available at the preschool, 1114 W. University Drive.

Supporters are asked to purchase tickets by Tuesday or to reserve them through the preschool by calling 940-383-3332.

The supper will be catered by El Guapo’s of Denton, and the University of North Texas Mariachi Band will entertain.
