Les Cockrell: Two guided hikes planned at Isle du Bois Unit

Guided hikes are planned for Friday and Saturday at the Isle du Bois Unit of Ray Roberts Lake State Park.

Both hikes will begin at 11 a.m. Those who plan on taking part in Friday’s hike should meet at the Bluestem parking area, and participants in Saturday’s hike should meet at the Wild Plum parking area.

The activities are free with regular park admission, which is $7 for those 12 and older.

Genealogical society’s speaker to address cemetery preservation

Guest speaker Rusty Brenner will discuss cemetery preservation at today’s meeting of the Denton County Genealogical Society at Emily Fowler Central Library, 502 Oakland St.

Refreshments and networking will be at 6:30 p.m., and the program will begin at 7 p.m.

There is no charge for the meeting, and those interested are invited to meet fellow genealogists and share tips and information.

Fundraiser to benefit shelter foundation’s adoption program

A pet rally fundraiser is planned for Saturday at Dusty’s Bar & Grill, 119 S. Elm St., to benefit the Denton Animal Shelter Foundation’s shelter adoption subsidy program.

The rally will be held from noon to 4 p.m., and the entry fee is a bag of dog or cat food or cat litter. A raffle drawing will benefit the shelter.

 

First African Violet Society to hold annual show, sale

The First African Violet Society of Denton will have its annual African violet show and sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in Erwin Hall at First Presbyterian Church, 1114 W. University Drive.

The sale is open to the public and admission is free.

Workshops will be offered throughout the day, and topics will include leaf propagation, repotting and the importance of a good growing medium.

Gardeners who need help with their African violets are invited to bring them to the show, and society members will share their knowledge.

Lions Club to host orientation session

Members of the Highland Village Lions Club will host a Lions orientation session at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Robert and Lee Duvall Center, 948 Highland Village Road in Highland Village.

Anyone who is interested in learning more about the Lions Club or who may want to become a Lion is invited to attend.

 

Denton Poets’ Assembly to meet Saturday

Members of the Denton Poets’ Assembly will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Emily Fowler Central Library, 502 Oakland St.

Members and guests will be given an opportunity to read two poems in any form. Dramatic monologue readings have been moved to April 20.

During their Feb. 16 meeting, members shared blank verse poem assignments and their free-choice poems.

J. Paul Holcomb presented a lesson on writing a dramatic monologue and shared samples he has written. Holcomb will be a featured speaker at the annual Austin International Poetry Festival, planned for April 18-21.

Becca Hines updated DPA on the status of submissions for the 2013 “Merging Visions” collaborative show with the Visual Arts Society of Texas. Those exhibits will be set up at three Denton libraries beginning March 28.

Denton business to host pet wellness clinic

Beau’s Bath House and Doggie Spa, 1800 Brinker Road, Suite 270, will hold a pet vaccination and wellness clinic from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The event will feature low-cost pet vaccinations, along with heartworm testing and other services.

Free hot dogs and soft drinks and prizes will be featured.

Texas Roadhouse to boost Big Brothers Big Sisters

Texas Roadhouse restaurants in the area will be hosting dinner fundraisers Monday to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Texas, according to a press release.

Diners who visit one of the restaurants between 4 and 9 p.m. and mention Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Texas will have a percentage of their dinner amount donated to the organization, the press release stated.

Texas Roadhouse restaurants in the area include: 2817 S. Interstate 35E in Denton, 3811 Long Prairie Road in Flower Mound and 4125 State Highway 121 in The Colony.

Fundraiser to benefit Friedreich’s ataxia group

A fundraiser to benefit the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance is planned for Tuesday at Outback Steakhouse.

Between 4 p.m. and closing time, staff members will be donating tips to FARA, according to a press release.

The restaurant is located at 300 S. I-35E, between Fort Worth Drive and Teasley Lane.

Denton Benefit League slates annual charity ball

“All That Jazz,” the Denton Benefit League’s 2013 charity ball, is set for March 23 at Dallas/Fort Worth Marriott Hotel & Golf Club at Champions Circle, south of Texas Motor Speedway at 3300 Championship Parkway in Fort Worth.

The event will include dinner, dancing and music.

The evening will be set in a 1920s theme. It will include a five-course dinner, a silent auction and a raffle. Auction items include a pair of diamond earrings, a week’s stay in a South Padre Island casita, a “date night” dining package, several golf packages and a barbecue event for 50 people.

Music entertainment will be provided by Emerald City in the main ballroom, and in the Bob Rogers Room, guests will hear the music of Denton pianist Bob Rogers.

First People’s Jewelers donated a refurbished stainless steel ladies’ Rolex watch with diamond bezel and diamond dial. Raffle tickets cost $35 or three for $100. The winning ticket will be drawn the night of the ball; the winner does not have to be present to win.

Now in its 40th year, the Denton Benefit League is a women’s organization that promotes volunteerism and raises funds for charitable purposes.

Krum Trade Days to benefit new park

Krum Trade Days, an event to support development of Krum’s new Eastside Park, will return March 23.

Hours will be 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Display spaces are now available for the sale, which will be held at the future site of the park on FM1173 across from Sonic Drive-In. Cost is $10 for an area measuring 10 feet by 20 feet or $20 for an area measuring 20 feet by 20 feet, organizers said.
