Shelby Kilpatrick, daughter of Scott and Susan Kilpatrick of Copper Canyon, was recently awarded the 2013 Tom Harpool Scholarship by the Denton County Master Gardener Association.

Kilpatrick plans to attend Texas A&M University in College Station in the fall to pursue a degree in entomology.

She is an active Denton County 4-H member, a certified Denton County Master Gardener, an Elm Fork Chapter Master Naturalist intern and is serving as a third-year member of the Texas 4-H Technology Team, according to a press release.

In addition, she is a beekeeper and represents the Texas Beekeepers Association as the 2013 Texas Honey Queen.

The $1,000 scholarship was created to assist and encourage students who are Denton County residents and enrolled in the study of horticulture or other related major at a college or university. The annual scholarship was named to honor Denton civic leader and philanthropist Tom Harpool.

American Legion Riders sponsor second annual Field of Honor

Members of the American Legion Riders, Post 71, are sponsoring the second annual Field of Honor for military veterans.

Flags bearing the names of military veterans will fly in formation in a field near the post at 2501 Spencer Road in Denton from Tuesday through May 28.

Flags can be purchased for $20 each. Each flag measures 3 feet-by-5 feet and will be tagged with the name of the honored veteran.

A Flag Dedication Ceremony is planned at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the post, followed by a potluck lunch.

Pick up a form anytime at American Legion Post 71 near the Flag Retirement Drop Box; or

Download the flag request online at www.txlegionpost71.org  and use the PayPal option to pay

“We are pleased to offer this community service to honor our Armed Forces, and emergency personnel and our personal heroes,” Perry Patrick, post commander and director of the American Legion Riders, Post 71, stated in a press release. “People have the opportunity to take to their homes or businesses a flag dedicated to their honoree and proudly fly it year round.”

Dedicated flags will be available for pick up by the purchaser from 3 to 6 p.m. May 29 through May 31.

Proceeds from the flags will assist local veterans, their families and other post projects.

Spokesdog Pageant deadline coming up

The Dog Days of Denton Celebration, planned for May 31 and June 1, will feature a Spokesdog Pageant, which has an entry deadline of Wednesday, organizers reminded recently.

Entries can be submitted by e-mail to info@dogdaysdenton.com. Complete details about this year’s Dog Days of Denton can be found at www.dogdaysdenton.com .

Other festival activities will include the traditional “Heinz 57” contest, pet tricks, dog singing contest, “How Obedient is Your Dog,” “Dancing With Your Dog” and “Canine Couture.”

The Dog Days of Denton Celebration will be held in the north end of Quakertown Park at 321 E. McKinney St. General admission is free, and the public is invited to bring dog food donations for Denton’s animal shelter.

 

Free program on Internet job searching skills planned

A program titled “Job Searching with the Internet” will be offered from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Denton’s South Branch Library, 3228 Teasley Lane.

The program is free but registration is required. Those interested can register up to one hour before the program, according to a press release.

The program will focus on online tools the library provides to help in job searches, as well as government sites and job-searching skills.

Free biannual CPAP clinic offered at Denton hospital

A biannual CPAP clinic will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Center for Sleep Disorders of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton.

The free clinic is open to anyone who has a CPAP and BIPAP machine, according to a press release. Door prizes will be given away and appetizers will be served. New styles of masks will also be on display.

Fundraiser for Denton County MHMR Center slated

A fundraiser for the Denton County MHMR Center is planned Thursday at Top That! Pizza, 2710 W. University Drive in Rayzor Ranch, according to a press release.

The Center will receive a percentage of food sales from customers that present a special flyer between 5 and 9 p.m. Diners without a flyer can put their receipt in a box near the cash register, the press release stated. Proceeds from the event will support the center’s efforts to provide quality mental health and intellectual, developmental disability services to the community.

 

Denton High class of 1973 members planning reunion

Members of the Denton High School graduating class of 1973 are planning their 40th reunion for June 28 and June 29, and organizers are seeking contact information for former classmates.

The event will begin with a mix-and-mingle session at Fair Hall on the North Texas State Fairgrounds at 7 p.m. June 28. Attendees are invited to BYOB, according to an event press release.

A golf tournament is planned at noon June 29 at Robson Ranch. The cost is $50.

A dinner and dance are planned from 7 to 11 p.m. June 29 at Robson Ranch. Cost before June 10 is $37.50 per person or $75 per couple. After June 10, cost will be $45 per person or $90 per couple.

NAMI Denton County sponsor support programs

NAMI Denton County, the local NAMI Affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, sponsors several support groups each month for family members, friends, caregivers and adults living with mental illness, according to a press release from the organization.

A NAMI Family Support Group and a Recovery International Support Group are held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays at Crossroads Bible Church, 8101 FM407 in Double Oak.

A Recovery International Support Group meets from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays in Room 193 of the Denton County MHMR Center, 2519 Scripture St. in Denton.

An additional NAMI Family Support Group meets from 7:30 to 9 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month at University Behavioral Health, 2026 W. University Drive in Denton.

Family support groups focus on stages of emotional response, principles of support and problem solving, according to a press release. Education about mental illness and living with its impact is provided. The support group is facilitated by trained NAMI members and there is no cost to attend.

Recovery International, endorsed by NAMI, is a cognitive-behavioral self-help program for persons diagnosed with mental illness, the press release stated. Those attending this support group learn how to manage negative thoughts, feelings, beliefs and behaviors that can lead to emotional distress and related physical symptoms. The group is facilitated by trained leaders and is free.
