The annual Dog Days of Denton, an event that celebrates dogs and their people, is planned for Friday and Saturday at the north end of Quakertown Park, 321 E. McKinney St.

Hours for this year’s festival will be 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, and visitors will find a variety of contests and other activities to keep them entertained.

Featured will be the traditional “Heinz 57” contest, pet tricks, a dog singing contest and the Spokesdog Pageant. New this year are “How Obedient is Your Dog,” “Dancing With Your Dog” and a “Canine Couture” costume contest, according to an event press release.

There will also be information about various breeds, pet-care tips, games and canine training and sports demonstrations, as well as arts and crafts for both canines and their humans, games for kids and dogs, information on pet adoptions and rescues, festival foods and more.

This year’s Dog Days of Denton will spotlight the Lions Club Leader Dog Program. Dog owners can try out their dog’s agility skills at the D.A.W.G. Agility Course on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to noon for a donation to the Leader Dog Project.

General admission is free, and the public is invited to bring dog food donations for Denton’s animal shelter. Friendly, non-aggressive dogs are welcome, but all dogs must be kept on a leash and controlled by their owners, the press release stated.

Owners are responsible for their dogs’ behavior and all dogs must have proof of current vaccinations.

CoServ foundation awards grant to Camp Summit

The CoServ Charitable Foundation (CCF) recently awarded a $20,000 grant to Camp Summit in Argyle, which serves children and adults with physical and/or intellectual disabilities.

The camp serves people age 6 to adults, Carla Weiland, executive director, stated in a press release.

The grant funds will be used for the purchase of a truck to replace a 16-year-old vehicle, officials said.

“A dependable work truck is imperative for Camp Summit staffers to help maintain more than 100 acres of campgrounds, the lodge, cabins and other structures year-round in order to deliver a quality experience for the hundreds of campers who benefit from the summer and fall activities,” Dennis Engelke, CCF executive director, stated.

The foundation has donated more than $56,700 to Camp Summit, and this is the fifth grant awarded since 2008, according to the press release. So far in 2013, CCF has approved more than $200,000 in grants.
