Les Cockrell: Fruit, candy toppings spice up pancake supper

Members of the Denton Breakfast Kiwanis will host their annual pancake supper fundraiser from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Guests can build their own stack of pancakes and add fruit and candy toppings courtesy of Kolache Haven and Candy Haven. Sausage will be served and gluten-free pancakes will be available.

Tickets, priced at $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-12, are available at www.pancakesupper.com and DATCU. Tickets also will be available at the door.

All proceeds benefit children including the Apple Tree Project of Interfaith Ministries, which provides children in need with backpacks, school supplies, clothing and shoes.

The goal of this year’s event is to raise $20,000. Last year, the club helped approximately 1,500 children, according to a press release.

Celebrity pancake flippers will include city, county and school officials and business leaders.

Entertainment will include the Immaculate Conception School Cherub Choir, Bill Rauhauser’s trio Déjà Vu and the Newton Rayzor Tamba Marimba Band.

The church is located at 2255 N. Bonnie Brae St. in Denton.

 

Denton Association of Christian Women to meet Tuesday

The Denton Association of Christian Women will hold its first meeting of 2014 at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in Stricklen Hall at Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home, 1304 Bernard St.

The speaker will be the Rev. Richard A. Brown, president, CEO and general counsel for the children’s home, who will share information about the facility and its programs, according to an announcement.

All women of the community are invited, and attendees are asked to use parking entry “D” off of Bernard Street.

 

Area residents invited to meet medalist Malone

Area residents are invited to meet Olympic medalist Jordan Malone during an event planned for 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday at Pourhouse Sports Grill, 3350 Unicorn Lake Blvd. in Denton.

Admission is free. The first 100 guests will get a free autographed picture, according to an announcement, and T-shirts will be available for purchase.

 

Red Cross announces two Denton County blood drives

The American Red Cross has announced two blood drives in Denton County this week.

The first drive is planned for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Retractable Tech, 511 Lobo Lane in Little Elm.

The second drive will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Golden Triangle Mall, 2201 S. Interstate 35E.

All blood types are needed, but O-positive, O-negative, B-negative and A-negative are especially needed, the announcement stated.

Area residents can call 1-800-733-2767 or visit www.redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.

Individuals who are 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health are eligible to donate blood.

 

Denton Hot Rods plans meet-and-greet Saturday

A Denton Hot Rods meet-and-greet for anyone interested in cars is planned for 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at El Guapo’s, located at 419 S. Elm St.

There is no membership fee, and participants don’t have to bring a vehicle. Everyone is welcome to attend the event and meet other car and truck enthusiasts, organizers said.

Retired school personnel to hold end-of-year luncheon

Members of the Denton Area Retired School Personnel Association will meet at 11:30 a.m. Friday at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex, 1500 Long Road in Denton.

This is the group’s last meeting until Sept. 5 and will feature an end-of-the-year luncheon. Cost is $12, and reservations can be made by emailing maggiedodddenton@verizon.net.

Music will be provided by harpist Sonja Westbrook, and the program will be “Humor and Wellness.” Cash donations for the Apple Tree Project will be collected.

 

Four performances of ‘The Secret Garden’ offered

The Acting Studio will present four performances of The Secret Garden Thursday-Saturday at Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater.

Performances will be at 7 p.m. daily, and a 2 p.m. matinee is set for Saturday.

Tickets cost $18 for adults and $16 for seniors and children ages 12 and younger. To order tickets, visit http://ActingStudioTX.tix.com. Advance tickets cannot be purchased at MCL Grand.

Based on a novel by English author Frances Hodgson Burnett, the story is considered a classic of children’s literature and has been made into a feature film at least three times.

The Acting Studio is operated in Grapevine and Frisco by owners Shane and Erica Peterman, both of whom are members of the Actors’ Equity Association with dozens of performing credits in the United States and Europe, according to a press release.

Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater is located at 100 N. Charles St., between Main and Church streets. Free public parking is available along Main and Church streets or at Lewisville City Hall, across Church from the center. Parking is not allowed on the grass lot across Church from MCL Grand.

 

Library to host online resources demonstration

Denton’s North Branch Library will host a demonstration of online business resources at 7 p.m. next Monday, according to an announcement from the library.

The program is free and will include information on such services as Reference USA and the Small Business Reference Center, available at the library.

Members of Oakmont Women’s Club will host their annual spring tea from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Oakmont Country Club in Corinth.

Cost is $25 per person, and 100 tickets will be sold. The event is open to the public, and all proceeds go to area charities.
