Keep Denton Beautiful recently announced the winners of its 2010-11 Environmental Education Grant Program.
The organization awarded a total of $2,300 toward educators' environmental projects.
Applications for the grant program were accepted in November, and grant winners are expected to complete their projects this spring.
Honorees were chosen based on factors such as the merit and need of the school, sustainability of the project, and the resources and commitment provided by the school, according to a Keep Denton Beautiful news release.
Winners include:
• Blanton Elementary School, to help the school start building an environmental learning center with a composting area, butterfly garden, beds designated for grade levels and a bird feeder area.
• Immaculate Conception Catholic School, for educational signage and materials for teachers that will raise awareness of the school's vegetable garden.
• McMath Middle School, for the school's ongoing "Gratitude/Gardening/Giving" project, which has included 120 active members over the past several years helping in the design and construction of six large pavestone flower beds, a compost bin and a rainwater harvesting system.
• McNair Elementary School, to allow the school to enhance its Environmental Learning Area walkways.
• Newton Rayzor Elementary School, to help restore the school's butterfly garden.
