Review set for group's proposal on regulations

The League of Women Voters of Denton will play host to a review of proposed gas drilling regulations written by the Denton Stakeholder Drilling Advisory Group at 7 p.m. Thursday in Room 178 of the UNT Environmental Sciences Building at West Hickory Street and Avenue C.

The speaker will be Adam Briggle, a UNT professor who led the advisory group.

Dealership collecting donations for homeless

A drive is under way to collect donations for the homeless at Classic Chrysler Jeep Dodge Mazda of Denton.

Items needed include blankets, clothing, gloves, nonperishable food items, personal items and financial donations. Donations should be taken to the service department at the dealership's Chrysler Jeep Dodge store, said Donna Smith, service director.

Clothing can be new, or used items that are in good condition. In addition to clothing, Smith said, there is a need for tarps.

Smith is also seeking a corporate sponsor to buy 50 rain suits.

Items collected during the drive will be delivered on Valentine's Day.

The dealership is located at 4984 S. Interstate 35E.

Association to hand out books at school

The Denton Area Retired School Personnel Association will be handing out books to teachers and students at Evers Park Elementary School at noon today in the school's foyer. The organization collected 386 books over the past year as part of a statewide effort by the Texas Retired Teachers Association.

 

 

Ann's Haven VNA plans grief workshop

Ann's Haven VNA will offer a free grief recovery workshop called Good Grief from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Ann's Haven VNA office, 325 W. McKinney St., Suite 101.

The workshop is free, but reservations are requested and can be made by calling 940-349-5900.

 

 

Mongo wins district's annual spelling bee

Harpool Middle School eighth-grader Jade Mongo won this year's Denton school district spelling bee on Thursday.

She outlasted David Brumbaugh, an eighth-grader at McMath Middle School, winning the championship in the 28th round.

Both students will represent the district at the Denton County Spelling Bee, set for 6:30 p.m. Feb. 9.
