Blotter: Man reports theft of hidden money

A Text Size

Someone broke into a man's apartment and stole a large amount of cash just a day after he acquired the money and hid it there, he told police Thursday.

The man said he sold a vehicle Tuesday for $4,500. He hid the cash inside an old CD player and placed in it a closet in his bedroom that was locked with a deadbolt, a police report states. He left the apartment in the 1700 block of Teasley Lane for work at 7 a.m. Wednesday and returned at 4 p.m.

Someone had used a large tool to pry open his front door.

The intruder took his 51-inch television, a PlayStation and 45 games. Then the intruder pried open the closet door, likely with the same tool, and took the old CD player that contained the cash.

The man said the only person who knew he even had the cash was his girlfriend, who has stolen from him before. He believes she told someone about the cash and was the source of the burglary, according to the police report.

Other reports

9000 block of Gardenia Street - A man told police Thursday that he recently was appointed guardian of an adult relative who suffers from dementia. He is supposed to make decisions for the man, and no one else is supposed to make important decisions for him, a report states.

He went by the man's house and found a "for sale" sign in the yard. Inside the house, he found a note stating that his relative and wife were moving to Oregon to be with the wife's son.

The man then learned that the wife had removed $18,000 from the couple's checking account, the report states. He said he believes she prompted the move without his knowledge to get the adult relative away from his guardianship.

600 block of East McKinney Street - A woman came to the police department Thursday to report that someone had used her brother's Social Security number to file an income tax return. She said her brother is her dependent, and she tried to file a return using his Social Security number. The IRS refused it, she said.

She believes that someone stole the identification number from a website she recently used, a report states. It offered free aid in obtaining a birth certificate. She filled in her brother's information but never received the birth certificate, she said.
