Celebrated poet, novelist and civil rights activist Maya Angelou will not address students at Texas Woman’s University on Wednesday as planned.
TWU officials said in an e-mail to the university community Monday that the soldout event scheduled at Margo Jones Performance Hall was canceled because Angelou is ill.
“It has been an exciting last few weeks with the impending visit of Dr. Maya Angelou to our campus,” said Ana Barraza, TWU director of the Center for Student Development in the e-mail. “We hope, along with her agency, that we will be able to reschedule this event for later this semester. We ask for your continued patience as we work through this matter.”
No further details regarding Angelou’s illness were provided and her publicist could not be reached for comment.
Angelou, 83, told the Denton Record-Chronicle earlier this month that she was looking forward to speaking to students about the necessity of people to have courage, especially women.
TWU students were asked to retain their tickets and to check the Center for Student Development website, the TWU website and its Facebook pages for updates.
Staff at the center will collect cards or messages to be sent to Angelou. Cards need to be at the Student Union ground floor by 1 p.m. Thursday, Barraza said.
For students who want to extend their well-wishes in person, a video recording will take place between 10 a.m. and noon at the Margo Jones Performance Hall. Messages will be limited to 30 seconds.
