A nine-vehicle pileup on Interstate 35 near Rector Road at about 10:45 a.m. Thursday caused major traffic backups as first responders and tow trucks moved to clear the site.
Two people were taken by ambulance to area hospitals with injuries that were not expected to be life-threatening, said Lonny Haschel, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety.
“We got lucky on this one,” Haschel said.
The southbound lanes were reopened in the early afternoon, he said, after heavy-duty wreckers cleared two recreational vehicles that were involved in the accident.
The chain reaction began after the driver of a Ford Focus slowed for some reason where the freeway reaches the crest of a large hill, Haschel said.
A strong line of storms, bringing winds and heavy rain in advance of a strong cold front, was moving through the area at the time. Many drivers reported their windows suddenly fogging over during that time.
