French trumps Moffitt

In a close race, Michelle French won the Republican nomination for Denton County tax assessor/collector, beating out Marc Moffitt.

Since no Democrats filed for the seat, French is taking over in January for Steve Mossman, who held the seat for 10 years.

“I’m very thrilled, to say the least,” French said. “It’s been a really long, hard campaign.”

French said she’s ready to go to work.

“We’re ready to serve our taxpayers,” she said.

Moffitt was a worthy opponent, she said.

“Hats off to my opponent,” French said. “He was a tough person to run against. He did a great job.”

Moffitt could not be reached for comment.

Both French, 50, and Moffitt, 35, campaigned about running the tax office more efficiently.

French said efficiency could be achieved by reaching out to the public and being proactive rather than reactive.

While campaigning, she said her focus would be on customer service.

She also said she would be sure any initiative brought forth would fit into the budget.

French has nearly 29 years of experience in the Denton County Tax Office, with 15 years in the motor vehicle department and 14 years in property tax and administration. She has been chief deputy since April 2000, serving under Mary Horn, who is now a county judge, and Mossman.

Moffitt’s idea of more efficiency was through the use of technology, he said, and he believes the benefits of improved technology will outweigh the cost.

During his campaign, he said he was well qualified for the office because of his combination of education and experience.
