Early voting for runoff races in Argyle, Denton and Little Elm begins today, with polls open every day, except Sunday, through June 19.
The Denton County Elections Administration has set up polling locations at the town halls in Argyle and Little Elm, as well as the Carroll Administration Building in Denton. Registered voters eligible to vote in the June 23 runoff can cast a ballot at any of the early voting locations. On election day, polling locations will be assigned by precinct.
Elections Administrator Frank Phillips said turnout for runoffs is typically very low.
“But I’m hopeful that the interest in the Denton mayor’s race will drive up turnout,” Phillips said via e-mail Friday afternoon. “Local government has a strong impact on most people’s lives, so this is their opportunity to have a say. I’m hopeful the voters will take advantage of this chance to pick their local leaders.”
In Denton, both the Place 5 City Council and mayoral races had three candidates in the May 12 election, but no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote. Therefore, Pete Kamp and David Zoltner are in a runoff for Place 5; Mark Burroughs and Neil Durrance continue their race for mayor.
In Little Elm, David Hillock and Charles Platt were the top vote-getters in the mayor’s race, pushing them into the June 23 runoff.
Some city council races are also on the ballot there.
While turnout matters to every candidate, it probably matters most to the two Argyle candidates who tied on May 12.
Both Joan Delashaw and Jackie Thomas told the Denton Record-Chronicle they haven’t changed campaign tactics for the Place 3 race, which garnered them 320 votes apiece.
